Function:
A non-standard stainless steel T-bolt is a specialized fastener designed for applications where standard, off-the-shelf T-bolts are unsuitable. Its primary functions are:
Secure Clamping in Unique Channels or Grooves: Its main job is to slide into a T-slot or a specialized channel (e.g., in extrusion profiles, machining beds, or custom frames) and be rotated 90 degrees to lock into place. A nut is then tightened onto the threaded end, pulling the bolt head against the underside of the slot to create an extremely strong, adjustable, and reliable clamp.
Providing a Custom Solution: The "non-standard" aspect means it is custom-manufactured to meet specific requirements that standard bolts cannot. This includes:
Unusual Dimensions: A larger or smaller head size, a longer or shorter shank, or a unique thread length to fit a proprietary extrusion or custom-machined part.
Specialized Load-Bearing: Engineered to handle higher shear, tensile, or dynamic loads than a standard bolt for a critical application.
Environmental Resistance: Made from specific grades of stainless steel (like 316 for high corrosion resistance) to perform in harsh environments like marine, chemical processing, or food and beverage equipment where rust is unacceptable.
Facilitating Adjustable and Modular Assembly: These bolts are fundamental components in modular systems (like 80/20 aluminum framing or machine guarding), allowing for components to be positioned and re-positioned anywhere along the length of the T-slot with ease, then locked down securely.
Structure:
The structure of a non-standard T-bolt deviates from common standards (like DIN 787 or ANSI) but retains the core anatomical features, which are modified for its specific purpose.
1. The Head (T-Head):
This is the most defining feature. The head is typically a low-profile, rectangular block that is wider than the shank.
In a non-standard bolt, the head's width, length, and thickness are precisely machined to fit a specific, non-standard T-slot dimension.
The corners of the head are often chamfered or rounded to facilitate easy insertion and rotation within the slot without binding.
2. The Shank (Shoulder):
The shank is the unthreaded section that connects the head to the threaded portion.
In a non-standard bolt, the shank's diameter and length are critical custom dimensions. The diameter must be small enough to fit through the neck of the T-slot, and the length must be precisely calculated so that the head can sit flush under the slot's ledge when the bolt is fully tightened.
3. The Threaded Section:
This is the end of the bolt that receives the nut.
While often a standard thread pitch (e.g., M8x1.25), it can be customized. This includes:
Thread Length: A longer or shorter threaded section than standard.
Thread Type: Possibly a fine thread for better adjustment precision or a left-handed thread for specialized applications.
The end of the threads may be chamfered for easier nut starting.
4. Material and Finish:
As specified, the material is stainless steel. The most common grades are:
304 SS (A2): Offers excellent corrosion resistance for most industrial and commercial applications.
316 SS (A4): Provides superior resistance to chlorides and acids, making it ideal for marine and highly corrosive environments.
The finish is typically the natural mill finish of the stainless steel (satin silver), but it can be passivated to enhance the corrosion resistance layer. It is rarely plated.
